The main program of National Academy of Osteopathy (Canada) is a Diploma in Osteopathic Manual Practice (DOMP). DOMP is a Canadian title accepted by most insurers. NAO holds the copyright to this title.
NAO’s academic program in manual osteopathy is a comprehensive and rigorous training that leads to a Diploma in Osteopathic Manual Practice (DOMP). The curriculum is presented in a series of study modules – each dedicated to a specific anatomical region – with faculty working together to coordinate content and ensure understanding is comprehensive and complete. Combining lectures, labs, case studies and clinical internship provides a smooth transition from academic knowledge to problem solving for treatment and management of patient’s conditions.
In this osteopathy program students learn how the human body works in progressive study modules that focus on back/spine, head/neck, upper and lower limbs. Each anatomical region is explored from all possible angles including anatomy, pathology, biomechanics, osteopathic principles, osteopathic diagnosis and osteopathic manual techniques (such as osteoarticular techniques, muscle energy techniques, soft tissue therapy, lymphatic drainage, cranial osteopathy, visceral manipulation, strain/counterstrain, facilitated positional release, balanced ligamentous tension, Still’s, as well as manual mechanotherapy, the lost techniques of osteopathy which we are the only school teaching it).
Students also explore how the body feels pain and how to treat it, within study modules that focus on specific symptom areas – including acute onset low back pain, thoracic spine pain, upper limb pain, lower limb pain, groin/hip/pelvis pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, headaches, and chronic low back pain. Students also develop problem solving and clinical skills by observing and participating in therapist-patient encounters.
Students complete the academic program by taking part in an internship program in NAO’s teaching clinic located at the York University Heights campus in Toronto, Ontario 9Canada) under the supervision of clinical faculty.
